Orden Ogan – Gunmen album cover

Power metal and spaghetti westerns turn out to be a natural fit. Gunmen drops Orden Ogan into a dark Wild West, and Seeb Levermann leans into it without ever tipping into parody. “Gunman” opens with the band’s trademark wall of choral backing vocals and a chorus that hits like a stampede, and “Fields of Sorrow” keeps the pace high.

Compared with Ravenhead, this one settles more often into heavy mid-tempo grooves, and the songs are stronger for it. “Forlorn and Forsaken” is classic Ogan bombast, while “Come With Me to the Other Side” brings in Liv Kristine for a duet that works far better than these things usually do. “Down Here (Wanted: Dead or Alive)” is the most fun on the record, and “Finis Coronat Opus” wraps things up on an appropriately epic note. A bit long, a bit samey in places, but a very good power metal album.
