Darkest Hour – Suffer Divine album cover

Eleven albums in, Darkest Hour still sound like they’re late for a fight. Suffer Divine kicks off with “All Cruelty Springs From Weakness” and barely stops for breath through the first half – Swedish-style melodic death riffs, thrash-speed drumming from Travis Orbin, and John Henry barking like the hardcore kid he never stopped being.

Mark Lewis produced it and gives the guitars of Mike Schleibaum and Nico Santora a sharp bite without sanding off the edges. The title track and “Warrior” were the singles, and you can hear why: big riffs, choruses made for shouting back. “Salvation” is pure At The Gates worship in the verses, even if its chorus doesn’t quite stick.

The second half is where it gets interesting. “The Unforgiving Hand” starts out on acoustic guitar before it turns nasty, and the closer “A Story Of Redemption”, the longest song on the record, is the best thing here. No reinvention. Just a band that has been doing this since the mid-90s showing the kids how it’s done.

Best tracks:

Warrior
The Unforgiving Hand
A Story Of Redemption
