Nobody buys a Dying Fetus record hoping for surprises, and Wrong One to Fuck With doesn’t pretend otherwise. What it does is sharpen every blade the trio already owned. “Fixated on Devastation” opens with that trademark lurch from pinch-harmonic squeals into a slam so heavy it feels like the floor tilts, and John Gallagher and Sean Beasley trade low growls and barks like two guys arguing in a cellar. Trey Williams is the secret weapon here; his blasts are precise, but it’s the little snare flicks inside the grooves that keep the slower parts from sagging.
“Panic Amongst the Herd” is the closest thing to a hit, a groove you can hum (sort of) wrapped in tremolo runs that tangle and untangle in seconds. “Die with Integrity” and “Seething with Disdain” take their time and let the riffs breathe before collapsing into the breakdowns everyone in the pit is waiting for. The middle stretch does blur a bit, and a couple of songs end exactly the way you expect them to, but the production, handled by Steve Wright with the band at WrightWay Studios in Baltimore, is dry, punchy and loud without turning to mush. Hard to argue with the title.
