Debut albums in this genre are usually where a band shows its influences. Polaris skipped that stage. The Mortal Coil already sounds like a band with its own voice, tight, angry and catchier than it has any right to be.
“Lucid” comes in swinging with off-kilter, chugging riffs and a chorus that sticks on first listen, and “The Remedy” is even better, the clean vocals carrying a hook that lifts the whole song without softening it. “Consume” leans harder into the breakdowns, while “Crooked Path” and the closing “Sonder” show they can write something with a bit more sadness and space in it. The screams are raw and the cleans are warm, and the trade-off between them is handled with real skill. The weak spot is the middle: a couple of tracks blur together, and the formula shows a little before “Casualty” picks things up again. Still, as a first full-length this is about as strong as modern metalcore got in 2017.
