Bleak doesn’t begin to cover it. Death Atlas is fourteen tracks about humanity wiping itself off the map, and Cattle Decapitation have never sounded this huge or this hopeless.
“The Geocide” is a fast, vicious opening shot after the eerie intro, and “One Day Closer to the End of the World” is classic modern Cattle: blast beats, grinding riffs and Travis Ryan switching between guttural roars and that strangled, melodic croon he’s turned into a trademark. “Bring Back the Plague” has the record’s nastiest groove. Producer Dave Otero gives it all real weight without smoothing off the edges, and the new rhythm section of Belisario Dimuzio and Olivier Pinard slots right in.
The short interludes break up the onslaught and set up the finale nicely. “Time’s Cruel Curtain” leans hard on Ryan’s clean-ish vocals to devastating effect, and the nine-minute title track, with guest vocals from Laure Le Prunenec, ends the album like a funeral for the planet. A career high.
