Valonielu is Oranssi Pazuzu’s third album and the point where their blend of black metal, krautrock and space rock stopped sounding like an experiment and started sounding like a language. Six tracks, roughly forty-six minutes, produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano together with the band.
Opener “Vino Verso” (“Askew Sprout”) rides a nagging, repetitive groove while Jun-His snarls over the top. “Uraanisula” (“Molten Uranium”) runs almost twelve minutes and builds from a hypnotic pulse into something genuinely frightening. Even the shorter “Reikä Maisemassa” has room to breathe.
The closer, “Ympyrä On Viiva Tomussa”, passes fifteen minutes and earns every one of them. Costin Chioreanu’s cover captures the mood well. Strange, patient, unsettling: the best Finnish record of the year, and maybe more than that.
