Masterplan began as a side project of guitarist Roland Grapow and drummer Uli Kusch while both were in Helloween, and became their main band after they left Helloween; the band dates its founding to 2001. Norwegian singer Jørn Lande joined, and the self-titled debut Masterplan was released by AFM Records in 2003.
Aeronautics followed in January 2005 on AFM. Lande left in 2006 over disagreements about the band’s musical direction, and Kusch also departed. With singer Mike DiMeo and drummer Mike Terrana, Masterplan released MK II on 23 February 2007. DiMeo left in 2009 and Lande returned for Time to Be King, released by AFM on 21 May 2010.
Singer Rick Altzi and bassist Jari Kainulainen joined in 2012, and Novum Initium was released by AFM in 2013. Drummer Kevin Kott joined in 2016, and PumpKings (2017) collected re-recorded versions of Helloween songs Grapow had written during his time in that band. The single “Rise Again” appeared in 2024.
After signing a worldwide deal with Frontiers Music, the band released Metalmorphosis on 26 June 2026, after the release had been moved from 22 May 2026. It is the band’s first studio album of new material since Novum Initium.
