Eight years after the debut, Wintersun’s second album finally arrived on Nuclear Blast, and it is only half of the story. The material was split into Time I and Time II, so what we get here is a record of roughly forty minutes.
“Sons of Winter and Stars” is the centrepiece, stacked with orchestral layers, choirs and lightning-fast guitar runs. “Land of Snow and Sorrow” slows the pace and carries the most memorable melody on the album, while the title track “Time” builds towards a grand, sweeping finish.
The problem is density. So many layers are piled on top of each other that the riffs sometimes vanish into the mix, and after such a long wait, forty minutes feels slight. Impressive and often beautiful, but a little airless.
