Dream Unending have never been a band that shares a rehearsal room. Justin DeTore and Derrick Vella live in different countries, and Certain Uncertainties was assembled across several studios: most of the drums tracked by Arthur Rizk at Solomon’s Gate in Easton, Pennsylvania, guitars and bass by Sean Pearson at Boxcar Sound in Hamilton, Ontario. Rizk then mixed and mastered the whole thing.
That patchwork process suits a record this loose. Death-doom is still the backbone – DeTore’s growl sits low in the mix, and “Strained Sincerity” is the most direct heavy track – but Vella spends long stretches playing clean, jazz-tinged lines that sound half-improvised. Leila Abdul-Rauf’s trumpet on the title track and Dave Vella’s keys on “Rubato” push the album further into late-night prog and psychedelia than most bands with a doom tag would dare. Brendan Radigan guests on vocals in “I Carry Your Burden”.
Rizk’s mix gives all of this room to breathe. The price is momentum: “I Carry Your Burden” drags, and the album asks for patience until the long closer “Causal” tips over into a thrashy finish. Fewer instant moments than Song of Salvation, more strange ones.
