Grey water, black rock, a wind that never drops.
That is the landscape Vesöld keeps painting, five years after the Reykjavík band’s debut Vítahringur. Mannveira’s black metal is raw and dissonant, but a thin, frozen melody keeps cutting through the noise like light under a cabin door, and it is that melody that makes the bleakness feel lived in rather than staged. Illugi Kristinsson’s vocals sound less like a performance than a man arguing with the weather. “Þrot” slows the pulse and lets in some post-metal air, “Aumingi” circles one hypnotic figure, and “Bölvunin” fades out on a folk-tinged passage that sounds like something remembered from much older songs.
Recorded with Jonni Norn and dressed in Joseph Deegan’s artwork, the record is seven songs of collapse with no rescue boat in sight. Its weakness is sameness. Around “Stormur” the second half starts circling the same cold patterns, and the tension slackens a little. Then “Rottur”, the short closer, bolts for the exit with an almost punk urgency. Rats, after all, are the first to leave.
