Post Self turns inward and gets stranger. The title track is classic Broadrick and Green, a grinding bass line and a drum machine that hits like a piston, but almost immediately the record starts drifting toward cold post-punk and murky electronics. “Parasite” is all clank and menace, while “Mirror of Finite Light” has a melancholy that would sit fine on an old 4AD sampler, if 4AD sampler bands owned bigger amps.
From the middle of the record on, it really gets under your skin. “Be God” crawls along with a mantra-like vocal, “Pre Self” barely bothers with riffs at all, and “The Infinite End” fades out in a haze of noise that feels more like a weather report than a song. Some fans will miss the battering-ram side, and honestly “No Body” is the only track that fully scratches that itch. But the mood holds, Broadrick’s production is claustrophobic in exactly the right way, and it’s a record that sounds like nobody else, which after all these years is still the whole point of Godflesh.
