Unleash the Archers – Abyss album cover

Abyss is the fifth album from Canada’s Unleash the Archers and the sequel to 2017’s Apex, picking up the story of The Immortal and moving it out into deep space. Recorded at Hansen Studios in Denmark, it’s a glossy, big-sounding record, and that suits the sci-fi setting.

Brittney Slayes is the star again. On the title track she sounds untouchable, and “Through Stars” has the kind of soaring chorus power metal fans live for. “Soulbound” is a short, sharp earworm. The guitars still bite underneath all that shine.

“The Wind that Shapes the Land” is the epic, all build and release, and “Afterlife” closes things out on a grand note. Some fans will miss the rawer edge of the older records. Most will be too busy singing along.
