Panther follows In the Passing Light of Day, and it is a very different animal. Where that album felt raw and organic, this one is built on programmed beats, synth textures and cold, processed guitars, produced by Daniel Gildenlöw with Daniel Bergstrand. It sounds restless and a bit hostile, and that is the point.
“Accelerator” opens with a stuttering electronic pulse before the chorus breaks wide open. “Restless Boy” is short, mean and almost industrial. The title track brings in something close to rap delivery, which will split fans, but it fits the anger in the lyrics.
The emotional weight sits at the end. “Icon” is the longest song here and earns its length, building slowly until the record finally exhales. Not the easiest Pain of Salvation album to love, but a bold one.
