Seventh Rum of a Seventh Rum is, fittingly, Alestorm’s seventh studio album, produced by Lasse Lammert. Nobody comes to this band for subtlety, and they don’t pretend otherwise. The keyboards are loud, the choruses are louder, and every song seems built to be shouted back by a sweaty festival crowd.
Opener “Magellan’s Expedition” is the best thing here, a galloping power metal track with a hook that sticks after one listen. “P.A.R.T.Y.” is exactly as daft as the title promises, which is the whole point. “Under Blackened Banners” is darker and more serious, and it shows the band can still write a proper epic when they bother. Patty Gurdy guests on hurdy-gurdy, and the folk colour suits them.
Over eleven tracks a few jokes wear thin, and the middle of the record sags a little. Still, “Wooden Leg (Part III)” closes things on a high, and if you already own a rubber duck you know exactly what you’re getting.
Best tracks:
