Powerwolf’s formula is so well known by now that the surprises on The Sacrament of Sin genuinely land. With Jens Bogren producing at Fascination Street, the Germans sound bigger and crisper than ever, and they take a couple of real risks along the way.
“Fire & Forgive” is the classic Powerwolf opener, organ blazing and Attila Dorn in full sermon mode, and “Demons Are a Girl’s Best Friend” is so catchy it is almost embarrassing. The real shock is “Where the Wild Wolves Have Gone”, the band’s first ballad, which works far better than it has any right to. At the other end, “Nightside of Siberia” digs in with a heavier, chugging riff, and “Stossgebet” brings the stomping, choir-heavy bombast fans love.
It is still Powerwolf, so if the choirs, the Latin and the wolf-priest theatrics never did anything for you, this won’t convert you. For everyone else it is one of their strongest records, with no real filler across eleven tracks.
