Anyone expecting another batch of beer-soaked blackened thrash is in for a surprise. Devouring Radiant Light is longer, moodier and far more melodic than the band’s earlier work, and new vocalist Adam Clemans has the rasp and range to sell it. Opener “Fen of Shadows” spends a good part of its running time on layered, wailing lead guitar before the band really lets rip.
The title track and “Temple of the Sun” are the best balance of old and new: the thrash pulse is still there, but the riffs open up into something closer to Scandinavian melodic black metal. “The Vault” is the big atmospheric statement and mostly earns its length. My one complaint is the sound. Kurt Ballou recorded it at GodCity, and it’s clean and powerful, but a band this nasty could use a bit more grit. Even so, a brave, grown-up record.
