Wake – Devouring Ruin album cover

Calgary’s Wake play blackened death metal with a lot on its mind. Devouring Ruin mixes tremolo riffs and merciless blasting with doomy slow sections, and the thick, atmospheric production gives every blast room to breathe.

“Kana Tevoro (Kania! Kania!)” is the most immediate track, fast and ugly with a riff that sticks. “This Abyssal Plain” and “Mouth of Abolition” show the band’s ear for dynamics, dropping into crawling, dissonant passages before exploding again, and the closer “The Procession (Death March to Eternity)” sounds exactly like its title.

A huge step forward and one of the year’s most underrated extreme records.

Best tracks:

Kana Tevoro (Kania! Kania!)
This Abyssal Plain
Mouth of Abolition
Torchbearer
The Procession (Death March to Eternity)
