Sylosis went quiet for a few years, and Cycle of Suffering sounds like Josh Middleton saved all his best riffs for the comeback. Middleton produced it himself and even painted the cover.
It’s a tighter, meaner record than their last. “I Sever” and the title track are thrash at heart, chugging and switching gears with real bite, while “Calcified” throws in a melodic hook big enough to fill a hall. The production is dense without going mushy, and Middleton’s roar has a new edge to it.
Twelve songs is maybe one or two too many. The closing “Abandon” earns its length though, and the comeback feels completely justified.
