Architects were formed in Brighton in 2004 by twin brothers Dan Searle on drums and Tom Searle on guitar. Their debut album, Nightmares, came out in 2006. Original singer Matt Johnson left soon afterwards, and Sam Carter took over vocals in 2007.

Ruin followed in 2007. After signing with Century Media in 2008, the band released Hollow Crown (2009), The Here and Now (2011) and Daybreaker (2012). In 2013 they moved to Epitaph Records, and Lost Forever // Lost Together followed in 2014.

Tom Searle, the band’s guitarist and main songwriter, died on 20 August 2016 at the age of 28, after living with cancer for three years. The band’s seventh album, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, had been released earlier that year. Josh Middleton of Sylosis stepped in as touring guitarist in 2016 and became a full member in 2017.

Holy Hell was released in 2018. For Those That Wish to Exist (2021) gave Architects their first number one on the UK Albums Chart, and The Classic Symptoms of a Broken Spirit followed in 2022. Middleton left the band on good terms in May 2023. The eleventh studio album, The Sky, the Earth & All Between, was released by Epitaph on 28 February 2025.
