New singer, same party. Splid is Kvelertak’s fourth album and the first with Ivar Nikolaisen out front, and anyone worried the band would lose its bite can relax. Nikolaisen has a rawer, more punk bark than his predecessor and it suits this loose, rowdy material well.
Kurt Ballou produced, and the guitars sound huge. “Rogaland” opens with a proper rock and roll stomp, “Crack of Doom” drags in Mastodon’s Troy Sanders for a chorus built for festival fields, and “Bråtebrann” piles riff on riff without ever feeling padded.
The back half gets longer and weirder. “Delirium Tremens” stretches out with almost proggy patience, which won’t be for everyone, and the album could lose a song. But the energy rarely drops, and “Tevling” is as catchy as anything they’ve done.
