Sepultura – Quadra album cover

Quadra is Sepultura’s fifteenth studio album, produced by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street, and it is built around a neat idea: twelve songs split into four sets of three, each set leaning on a different side of the band.

The opening block is the thrash one. “Isolation” and “Means to an End” hit with real speed and precision, and Andreas Kisser sounds hungrier than he has in years. From there the album moves through heavy groove, with “Capital Enslavement” and “Ali” stomping hard, into the more progressive stretch around “Guardians of Earth” and the instrumental “The Pentagram”.

The slower, melodic final section is where people will disagree. “Agony of Defeat” lets Derrick Green show a softer side, and “Fear, Pain, Chaos, Suffering” closes the album with guest vocals from Emmily Barreto. Both are brave choices, and both work better than you would expect.

It is a lot of ideas for one record, and not every transition is smooth. But Quadra is the most ambitious and best-sounding Sepultura album of the Green era.
