Polaris – The Death of Me album cover

Polaris’ second album is metalcore done properly. The breakdowns hit hard, the choruses are huge, and the playing is tight enough to make most of their peers sound sloppy. The screams sound like they mean it, the clean hooks are sharp, and the contrast works every time.

“Hypermania” is a short, sharp blast of pure aggression, “Masochist” has the best chorus on the record, and “Landmine” bounces with a groove that will flatten a pit. Closer “The Descent” is the most ambitious thing they have written, slower and darker, with a payoff worth the wait. Nothing here reinvents the genre, but very few 2020 metalcore records sound this confident.
