Ozzy Osbourne – Ordinary Man album cover

Nobody expected much from a new Ozzy album in 2020, which is partly why Ordinary Man lands so well. Producer Andrew Watt built a tight core band around him with Duff McKagan on bass and Chad Smith on drums, and the result is loose, punchy and refreshingly free of overthinking.

“Straight to Hell” opens with a classic Ozzy hook, “Under the Graveyard” is a brooding mid-paced crawl with a big chorus, and the title track, which features Elton John, is far more moving than it has any right to be. Ozzy singing about mortality at this point in his life hits differently.

Not everything lands. The Post Malone tie-ins feel bolted on and will divide people. But as a late-career statement from the Prince of Darkness, it is honest, catchy and a lot of fun.

Best tracks:

Straight to Hell
Under the Graveyard
Ordinary Man
Goodbye
