Love them or loathe them, Five Finger Death Punch know how to make an album sound massive. F8, their eighth, is again produced by Kevin Churko, and it is thicker and a little harsher than the last few records. It is also the first with drummer Charlie Engen, who hits hard and keeps things tight.
“Inside Out” is classic Death Punch, a chugging verse into a chorus built for arenas. “Living the Dream” has a bit more bite, while “This Is War” is the heaviest thing here. “A Little Bit Off” is the radio-friendly curveball, and “Darkness Settles In” is a genuinely affecting slow-burner. The guitar work deserves credit too, with more melodic detail than usual. With thirteen tracks the second half drags, but the best songs are among the band’s strongest.
