Nightwish – Yesterwynde album cover

Yesterwynde is Nightwish’s tenth album, the closing chapter of the trilogy that began with Endless Forms Most Beautiful, and the first with Jukka Koskinen on bass. It runs over seventy minutes, it comes with a full orchestra and choirs, and the band aren’t touring it. So this is very much a record meant for headphones and a long evening.

Honestly, it’s the most rewarding thing they’ve done with Floor Jansen so far. “Perfume of the Timeless” is an eight-minute statement of intent, “The Day of…” is a strange, swinging piece that grows on you fast, and “An Ocean of Strange Islands” has Floor at her most commanding. “Hiraeth” and “The Weave” bring back the folky, Celtic warmth that Troy Donockley has given this band for a decade.

It isn’t flawless – “The Antikythera Mechanism” is clever on paper but plodding, and the album could lose ten minutes. But when “Lanternlight” fades out, it’s hard not to feel moved. Tuomas Holopainen still knows how to write a goodbye.
