Wintersun are the Finnish band of singer, guitarist and composer Jari Mäenpää, famous for grand, layered melodic death metal and for how long their albums take. They have released four studio albums, most recently the long-awaited Time II in 2024.

Jari Mäenpää started Wintersun in 2003 as a side project while he was still singing and playing guitar in Ensiferum. When he took time off to record it, Ensiferum let him go, and the self-titled debut came out in September 2004, with Mäenpää playing almost everything himself and Kai Hahto on drums.
Work on the next record began in 2006 and grew into a two-part project. Mäenpää’s perfectionism and technical problems stretched it for years, and Time I finally appeared in October 2012. The Forest Seasons (2017), recorded in between, was funded through a crowdfunding campaign.
Time II became something of a running joke among fans, until it was finally released on 30 August 2024, twelve years after part one, together with a 12-disc box set called Time Package.
