After two albums of strings, ballads and slow-burning drama, Leprous have plugged back in. Melodies of Atonement, their eighth record, was tracked with David Castillo at Ghostward Studios in Sweden, and it sounds like a band playing in a room together again. The arrangements are tighter and the songs are shorter, with electronics and heavy, staccato riffing replacing the orchestral layers.
“Silently Walking Alone” opens with a nervous pulse and explodes, “Atonement” is a hypnotic, groove-driven single that rewards repeat listens, and “Like a Sunken Ship” has the heaviest moments they’ve put on tape in years. Einar Solberg’s voice is still the centrepiece, and on “Faceless” and the closer “Unfree My Soul” he hits the kind of notes that make other singers quit.
Baard Kolstad deserves special credit too: his drumming drives every track. If you missed the edgier Leprous of The Congregation, this is the one you’ve been waiting for.
