Masterplan – Metalmorphosis album cover

Thirteen years after Novum Initium, the first thing you notice is how expensive this sounds. The mix gives every element a lane: Axel Mackenrott’s keyboards sit wide and glossy, Kevin Kott’s kick is tight rather than clicky, and Rick Altzi’s gravel is pushed right to the front. Nothing smears. Nothing hides.

That clarity cuts both ways. “Chase the Light” opens with genuine bite and “Shadow Man” is the album’s best piece of engineering, all double-kick and twin-lead precision. But the compression is so even that the dynamic range barely moves between the heavy cuts and the softer ones, and by “Ghostlight” the ear has stopped registering contrast. “Electric Nights” is the clearest case of a chorus written to a template rather than to the song.

“The Call” is where the arrangement finally breathes, with space left around the vocal and a structure that builds instead of repeats. More of that, please. As it stands, this is a tidy, very well-built record that plays beautifully and leaves surprisingly little behind.
