Two guitarists who could each fill a record alone, Mick Barr and Colin Marston, spend Diotima weaving tremolo lines around each other until the seams disappear. The difference from earlier Krallice records is structure: the songs finally move with a sense of direction instead of simply churning. Nick McMaster’s bass holds the floor and his growl carries a large share of the vocals, which gives the record a lower, thicker centre.
The weak spot is the drum sound. Lev Weinstein plays with real musicality, but he sits too far back, and the long pieces sometimes lose their pulse under the guitar wash. “Telluric Rings” and “Dust and Light” survive that best, building almost orchestral swells. Patience required. Rewarded, mostly.
