Agalloch were formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1995 by John Haughm. Guitarist Don Anderson and bassist Jason William Walton joined in the following years.

The band released their first three studio albums on The End Records: Pale Folklore in 1999, The Mantle in 2002 and Ashes Against the Grain in 2006. They then moved to Profound Lore Records, which released Marrow of the Spirit in 2010.

The Serpent & the Sphere, the band’s fifth studio album, was released by Profound Lore Records on 13 May 2014. It was recorded in Portland with producer Billy Anderson, and Nathanaël Larochette of Musk Ox contributed acoustic guitar interludes.

Agalloch split up in 2016. John Haughm went on to form Pillorian, which released its debut album in 2017.

In 2023 Haughm, Anderson and Walton reformed the band with drummer Hunter Ginn, who replaced Aesop Dekker. Their first show back was at Prophecy Fest in Balve, Germany, in September 2023. In 2025 they played two California dates with Emperor in May and headlined Fortress Festival in Scarborough, England. The band have not released new studio material since the reunion.
