Primordial – Redemption At The Puritan’s Hand album cover

A.A. Nemtheanga called it “the death album”, and he meant it plainly. There is no fantasy here and no tidy concept, just eight long songs circling mortality, faith and the stubborn human need to believe in redemption when nothing seems to promise it.

The band travelled from Ireland to Wales in the winter of 2010 to record with Chris Fielding, and you can almost hear the cold in the room. “No Grave Deep Enough” rolls in like weather over a bog, the twin guitars ringing rather than cutting. “Lain with the Wolf” carries that unmistakable Primordial melody, the kind that feels older than the people playing it.

The heart of the record is its second half. “The Puritan’s Hand” turns its anger on the machinery of belief, and Nemtheanga sings it like an accusation delivered at a graveside. “Death of the Gods” closes with something close to exhausted defiance. Martyrdom, sacrifice, retribution: the words keep coming back, and the music keeps marching through them, slow and unbending, until the last chord simply refuses to resolve.
