Adam Dutkiewicz produces Killswitch Engage records the way he plays guitar: big, clean and with every melody placed exactly where it hurts. This Consequence is the band’s ninth album and arrives almost six years after Atonement, the longest gap of their career. It is also the first time since Alive or Just Breathing that the whole band worked on an album together in the same room.
That shows in the result. “Abandon Us” and “Discordant Nation” have a live, unpolished snap to them, and Jesse Leach’s jump from scream to soaring chorus in “I Believe” is the band’s strongest hook in years. It became their first top-ten hit on the US Mainstream Rock chart.
If there is a criticism, it is that the band rarely steps outside its classic template. At ten songs, though, the record never outstays its welcome.
