Architects’ eleventh album is the heaviest thing they have put out in a while, and it sounds like they had fun making it. Jordan Fish produced it, so the synths and the huge, glossy choruses are still there, but “Whiplash” and “Blackhole” come in swinging, all stop-start riffs and breakdowns that hit like a door slammed in your face. Sam Carter sounds unleashed.
The guests are well picked. House of Protection turn “Brain Dead” into a short, glorious mess, while Amira Elfeky gives “Judgement Day” a darker, colder edge. “Seeing Red” is still a beast. Then “Chandelier” closes the record on a slower, wide-open note, and you want to hit play again.
