Delain’s sixth album throws more at the wall than anything they had done before. Apocalypse & Chill mixes chunky riffs, heavy synths and full orchestration, and somehow most of it sticks. Charlotte Wessels is in commanding form, switching from sweet pop phrasing to real grit without ever sounding forced.
“One Second” and “Burning Bridges” are the instant hits, big and bold with choruses you will be humming for days. “Vengeance”, featuring Beast in Black’s Yannis Papadopoulos, is a high-octane duet with a proper rhythmic punch, and “Masters Of Destiny” shows the band at their most cinematic. “Creatures” is the sleeper, darker and stranger than the singles. At thirteen tracks the record runs a little long, and a couple of the poppier songs feel like filler. Still, it is a confident, colourful album that refuses to play it safe.
