Seventy-nine minutes is a lot to ask of anyone, but A Dawn to Fear earns nearly every one of them. Where Mariner reached for the stars, this one stays on the ground, in the cold and the dark, and it’s all the heavier for it.
“The Silent Man” opens with ten minutes of pounding, glacial riffing and Johannes Persson’s raw howl, and “Lay Your Head to Rest” follows with martial drumming and a slow-burning melody that refuses to resolve. “Nightwalkers” is the most direct thing here, pure sludgy weight. The real peak is “Lights on the Hill”, fifteen minutes that build from near silence into something crushing and strangely hopeful. “The Fall” closes the album on another long, patient climb.
Patience is the key. A few passages drift a little longer than they need to, but this is post-metal made by people who still know how to hit hard.
