Exhorder – Mourn the Southern Skies album cover

Twenty-seven years after The Law, the New Orleans crew that so many people credit with inventing the groove Pantera made famous finally came back, and they didn’t come back soft. Kyle Thomas sounds furious and in great voice, and the riffs are thick with that swampy, Southern swing the band was always about.

“My Time” is the perfect re-introduction: mid-paced, mean and catchy, with squealing leads over the top. “Asunder” and “Hallowed Sound” push the tempo up into proper thrash, and “Beware the Wolf” has a stomp you can feel in your chest. The album does sag in the middle, where “Yesterday’s Bones” stretches past seven minutes without quite justifying it, but the closing title track is a slow-burning epic that pays off.

Not a perfect comeback, but an honest, heavy one that sounds like Exhorder and nobody else.
