Neurosis

Neurosis formed in Oakland, California, in December 1985. The founders were guitarist and singer Scott Kelly, bassist Dave Edwardson and drummer Jason Roeder, all formerly of Violent Coercion, and the band’s name came from a Violent Coercion song. Their 1987 debut Pain of Mind was fast hardcore punk, and guitarist and singer Steve Von Till joined in 1989.

From Souls at Zero (1992) onwards, the band brought in doom and industrial elements and slowed their music into something heavier and more expansive, which helped create the sound later called post-metal. Enemy of the Sun (1993) and Through Silver in Blood (1996) followed. Keyboardist and sound designer Noah Landis joined in 1995, and in 1999 the band founded their own label, Neurot Recordings, the same year Times of Grace came out on Relapse Records.

Albums such as A Sun That Never Sets (2001), The Eye of Every Storm (2004), Given to the Rising (2007), Honor Found in Decay (2012) and Fires Within Fires (2016) kept the band at the top of their field. In late 2019 the band quietly removed Kelly after learning of his history of domestic abuse. This became public in August 2022, when Kelly admitted it himself, and the band then stayed inactive for several years.

On 20 March 2026 Neurosis surprise-released An Undying Love for a Burning World through Neurot Recordings. It was their twelfth studio album and their first in ten years, and it introduced former Isis guitarist and singer Aaron Turner as a member. The band stressed that this was a return and not a reunion, and they have since announced tour dates into 2027.
