Beseech – Future. Present. Past. album cover

Some voices belong together, and hearing them again after years apart feels like finding an old letter in a drawer. Beseech, the gothic metal band from Borås who gave us Black Emotions, Drama and Sunless Days, split in 2006, returned briefly with My Darkness, Darkness in 2016, and now, ten years on, bring back their most loved pairing: Erik Molarin and Lotta Höglin.

Future. Present. Past. lives up to its title. The melancholy, the doomy weight and the dark romance of the band’s classic years are all here, but the production has a clean, modern clarity that lets the two voices circle each other like dancers in a candlelit hall. Opener “Ambiguous Mind” sets the mood immediately, “Hesitation” and “Boundless Space” drift into atmospheric twilight, and “End This” adds a heavier edge without losing the melody. There is even a Roxette cover, “The Sweet Hello, the Sad Goodbye”, which fits the gloom far more naturally than you would expect.

It doesn’t try to turn back the clock, and a couple of songs feel a little too gentle. But as a late-night record for anyone who grew up on Scandinavian gothic metal, it is a warm and welcome homecoming.
