Thirteen songs, thirteen cards. On their seventh album the Italians name every track after one of the Tarot’s Major Arcana, from “The Fool” to “The World”, but Arcani is not a story album. Each card is its own song, and the record runs to roughly 55 minutes.
The line-up: Kristin Starkey, Michele Guaitoli (also piano) and guitarist Marco Pastorino share lead vocals, with Luca Negro on bass and Marco Sacchetto on drums. “The Devil: Sin, Sin, Sin” came first as a single with a video, and “The Fool” was the fourth. The detours are the news. “The Tower: Lean Into Fear” is plain hard rock, “The Chariot: Alla Ricerca dell’America” mixes Italian lyrics with a Swedish line for Starkey’s adopted home, and “The World” closes on acoustic guitar.
The three-voice interplay and the size of the choruses are the main selling points, and “The Hanged Man: Petrichor” is the most ambitious arrangement the band has tried. Symphonic purists may find the detail thinner and the sound more modern than they like. Anyone who came for melody gets plenty.
