Seven years after Oath Bound, Protector and Silenius returned with exactly the album their fans hoped for. Summoning have never chased change, and Old Mornings Dawn is still built from slow drum programming, layered keyboards, distant rasped vocals and Tolkien. What has improved is the colour. The horns, flutes and choirs sound fuller, and the songs have room to breathe. After the opening “Evernight”, “Flammifer” sets the tone, a slow march with a melody that keeps coming back like a refrain. The title track and “Caradhras” are stately and sad in the way only this duo can manage, and “Earthshine” closes the record on a patient high.
If you have never liked Summoning, nothing here will change your mind. If you have, it is a homecoming, and one that rewards headphones and long walks.
