Summoning were formed in Austria in 1993, and since the mid-1990s the band has been the duo of Protector (Richard Lederer) and Silenius (Michael Gregor), who built their sound around grand keyboard backdrops, raw black metal and lyrics drawn from Tolkien’s world.

Their studio albums began with Lugburz and Minas Morgul, both in 1995, followed by Dol Guldur (1997), Stronghold (1999), Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame (2001) and Oath Bound (2006).

Old Mornings Dawn came out on Napalm Records on 5 June 2013, seven years after Oath Bound. Four of its songs are built around the tale of Eärendil the mariner, and two use lyrics from Tolkien’s poems “City of Present Sorrow” and “Town of Dreams”.

The eighth album, With Doom We Come, followed on Napalm Records on 5 January 2018 and remains the band’s most recent release.
