Super Collider came out on Dave Mustaine’s own Tradecraft imprint through Universal, with Johnny K co-producing. It debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200. That is the good news.
The rest is harder to defend. The title track is a mid-tempo radio song with a chorus that would have been rejected from Risk, and “Dance in the Rain”, with guest vocals from David Draiman of Disturbed, builds slowly toward a payoff that never quite arrives. The cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Cold Sweat” is fun, but it is a bad sign when the borrowed song is the most alive thing on the record.
“Kingmaker” and “Built for War” at least remember that this band used to play fast, and there are a few solos worth rewinding. Too much of the album, though, sounds careful and tired at once. For the completists only.
