Spiritbox’s second album is bigger, stranger and heavier than Eternal Blue, and it wastes no time proving it. “Fata Morgana” and “Black Rainbow” open with low-tuned grooves that hit like a wall, and Courtney LaPlante switches from a full-throated roar to a clean, floating melody without ever sounding like she’s changing gear.
“Soft Spine” is pure violence. “Perfect Soul” is the opposite, haunting and spacious, and it might be the best song they’ve written. Dan Braunstein and Mike Stringer produced the record, and Stringer’s guitar tone is something else, thick and slightly alien.
The back half dips a touch, but “Crystal Roses” and closer “Deep End” are worth sticking around for. Easily one of the year’s essential heavy records.
