Montreal’s Spectral Wound don’t reinvent black metal on A Diabolic Thirst. They just do it better than almost anyone did in 2021. Six songs, 40 minutes, tremolo riffs that actually stick and a raw but clear production that lets the melodies cut through the blasting.
“Frigid and Spellbound” is the one that hooks you, full of cold, mournful leads and a swagger that sometimes borders on rock ’n’ roll. “Mausoleal Drift” is the long, sorrowful centrepiece. “Fair Lucifer, Sad Relic” goes straight for the throat.
