Sólstafir’s first record for Century Media was recorded at Flóki Studios in remote Skagafjörður, and it’s the most varied album they’ve put out in a decade. Nine songs, all sung in Icelandic, swinging between the old black metal fury and the dusty, cinematic rock they’ve been perfecting since Svartir sandar.
The title track is the surprise: fast, raw and blackened, with Aðalbjörn Tryggvason describing it as a song about witnessing the end of your own world. “Blakkrakki” has an almost punk drive, while “Sálumessa” is the classic slow-burning Sólstafir epic. Not every gamble pays off – “Grýla” wanders a bit – but the closing “Kuml (forspil, sálmur, kveðja)” ends things with real weight. After the softer Endless Twilight of Codependent Love, this sounds like a band rediscovering its teeth.
