VOLA’s fourth album keeps the Danish band’s trademark mix of downtuned djent chugs, synth haze and Asger Mygind’s soft, almost pop vocal hooks. It’s also their first since Witness in 2021, and the long wait shows in the polish: every song is tight, glossy and over before four or five minutes.
The big talking point is opener “Cannibal” with In Flames frontman Anders Fridén, whose rough growls give the band a heavier edge they rarely chase on their own. “Break My Lying Tongue” and “Paper Wolf” are excellent singles, and “Bleed Out” is the most ambitious piece here.
The problem is the middle stretch. Several songs follow the same quiet-verse, massive-chorus template, and at only 41 minutes the record still feels a bit samey. Very good, occasionally great, but not the leap forward some fans hoped for.
