At 41 minutes and 38 seconds, Unatøned is the shortest album Machine Head have ever made, and Robb Flynn and co-producer Zack Ohren clearly wanted it lean. It was recorded in Oakland at Robb’s Jam Room and Sharkbite Studios, mixed and mastered by Colin Richardson and Chris Clancy, and it is the first record with Reese Scruggs as a full member on guitar.
The production is huge and modern, and “Unbøund” and “Bønescraper” are exactly the kind of singles Flynn can write in his sleep. The problem is cohesion. Twelve songs in that running time leaves several ideas feeling half-finished, and more than one critic described the record as a mix of strong singles and filler. The stylised ø in every title doesn’t hide it.
A decent Machine Head album, not an essential one.
