Ghost – Skeletá

Ghost – Skeletá album cover

Skeletá is Ghost’s sixth studio album and introduces a new frontman figure, Papa V Perpetua, the latest character played by Tobias Forge. Forge produced the record himself under the alias Gene Walker.

Commercially it was the band’s biggest moment yet. The album entered the US Billboard 200 at number one with 86,000 equivalent units, making Ghost only the second performing Swedish act ever to top that chart, after Ace of Base in 1993.

Musically it leans on arena rock, glam and melodic hard rock more than on metal. Lead single “Satanized” introduced Perpetua with a tale of demonic possession, and “Lachryma” and “Peacefield” followed. Reviewers noted a more introspective tone than usual, with lyrics circling guilt, identity, faith and failure.

The Skeletour that followed ran to 73 dates and made headlines of its own for a phone-free policy at every venue.

A Metacritic average of 78 sums up the reception well: polished, catchy and unmistakably Ghost, if a little less surprising than the band at its peak.

Best tracks:

Satanized
Lachryma
Peacefield
