Kardashev call what they do deathgaze, and Alunea is the clearest picture yet of what that means. The Arizona band pick up the story of The Almanac here, as a direct sequel, and the music is just as ambitious as the concept. Death metal weight, deathcore-sized breakdowns, and long stretches of shimmering, melancholic guitar that drift closer to post-rock.
Mark Garrett is the centre of it. He switches between a deep growl and a clean, soaring voice so smoothly that “Reunion” and “Seed of the Night” feel like they’re built around his melodies rather than the riffs. Nico Mirolla’s guitar leaves plenty of air, and Zack Ohren’s mix keeps the low end heavy without smothering it.
Two guest spots widen the palette. Erin of Genital Shame sings on “Speak Silence”, and Paweł J.J. Przybysz plays duduk on “We Could Fold the Stars”, which gives the album its most unusual and affecting moment. A few songs run together on first listen, but “Truth to Form” and the closing “Below Sun & Soil” hit as hard as anything here.
