Portugal’s Gaerea made a decent enough start with Unsettling Whispers in 2018, but Limbo, their second album, is a different animal. Six long tracks, almost no breathing room, and vocals that sound like someone tearing their throat out on every line.
“To Ain” opens at full gallop and sets the template: blasting drums, tremolo walls that keep shifting, and melodies buried just deep enough that they hit on the third listen rather than the first. “Null”, which got a video ahead of the album’s release, is the most direct song here and the easiest way in. “Conspiranoia” leans harder on the post-black side, with slower, crushing passages that open up before the band slams back into overdrive.
Then there is “Mare”, the closer, long and patient, building to the most cathartic stretch on the record. The production is dense without turning to mush and the guitars have real weight. Plenty of bands in this corner of black metal chase the same feeling. Gaerea simply write better songs than most of them.
